| Other Info | This month's Steppin Up we pay a tribute to the hard working producers on the Badman Press label. There will be FREE BADMAN PRESS DIGITAL release giveaways as well as a few other Badman Press goodies. The headliner for the evening is no stranger to Ottawa, if you grew up in the rave scene here then you will know this DJ/Producer/Promoter very well. Coming all the way from the east coast of Canada, Capital Bass Culture is proud to present.... FREEDOM DANISH (Halifax, NS) Badman Press, Pop n' Lock Records, ESP, Root Sellers, wickedbad.net, freedomdanish.com It's been 5 long years since Freedom Danish (aka Jorah Kai) has touched down in the capital. Freedom Danish boasts there is not a party out there that he can’t rock. Whether playing exclusive dubs at a bass music night, rocking an original live festival set with Myagi and the Root Sellers, teaching the merits of street bass to a house club, stripping down a fetish festival, or tearing the roof off a psychobilly party, he’s got a huge catalogue of music and loves to engage and educate all types of audiences with high energy mixing and new aural flavours. Fall 2008 brought another distinction to this veteran of the Canadian dance scene: he became the Queen’s DJ. Commissioned by her Majesty and the Canadian Forces to guest judge and perform at a DJ battle, he was well distinguished for a short showcase set that showed his mastery of many genres by weaving more than thirty tracks into fifteen minutes. Freedom Danish has performance history stretching back to the hey-day of the ‘90s rave scene across Canada and the United States, but cut his teeth as a young DJ and promoter in Ottawa, Canada. He became notorious both for throwing some of the best parties in the history of the Ottawa scene which gave many of its most poplar exports their first gigs as well as clashing with the police over rave laws and being subject to several messy shutdowns. Performing for a decade as Jorah Kai, he was one of the first to break into the American market, headlining NYC on multiple occasions with his popular, eccentric Kaicore sound. Canadian bass music icon ill.Gates aka the Phat Conductor credits Freedom Danish with introducing him to audio production, and they made their first collaboration Dogs Barking Jungle Bells in 1999. Their next collaboration would be ten years later, the accessible smash hit of the summer On a Boat (remix). This track hit #2 on the what.cd charts and received over 15,000 downloads before it hit torrents. Another one of his long-time friends DZ honed his mixing skills on Freedom’s decks and at his shows in the ‘90s before achieving household name status with his #1 smash hit Down ten years later. DZ and Freedom Danish finally wrote a tune together in ‘09, a street bass party favourite called Gay Fish. Freedom has a forthcoming release “Quest for Fiyah” with The Root Sellers and Harmsworth on Badman Press for early 2010, and plans for many more collabos with DZ & the Badman Press crew this year. The “Don of North American Breaks” Myagi also signed Freedom Danish & the Root Sellers to his label Pop n Lock last year, and several of their collaborative tracks have been charting well with more slated for release for Spring. Last summer, Freedom toured with the Pop n Lock Sound System, headlined all three nights of Evolve Festival Ten, and his appearance at the international Montreal Fetish Festival (’09) was greatly received. After smashing Montreal’s hottest new dub step night Bass Drive with fellow Badman RedEyz, resident DJ Construct wrote that Freedom “straight up murdered” the night, while organizer Jenny Carmichael (DJ Vilify) called it her “most exciting … best night yet.” His stage presence has been called a ball of head banging rock-out contagious energy, and one thing his many appearances at clubs and festivals all across Canada have in common: any place he stops, he is welcomed back to a hungry crowd ravenous for more Danish. LOCAL SUPPORT FOR THE EVENING PROVIDED BY: RedEyz Badman Press, Capital Bass Culture An up-and-comer in his own right, RedEyz has actually been heavily involved in Ottawa’s rave & afterhours scene for well over a decade. From throwing successful events, to performing alongside national/international artists the likes of DZ, Scott Brown, Man of Zion, Freedom Danish, Marty McFly, Ill Gates, Vilify & Construct, and DJ? Acucrack – a man of eloquent taste, his DJ sets are renown for being hard and dirty; whether he’s throwing down Dubstep, Electro house or Minimal Techno. It was only a matter of time until he took the next step into the production arena and when he did, RedEyz teamed up with DZ in the spring of 2008. Their first track, “Call it Dirty”, was picked up by Bass Tourist Records and was released b/w DZ’s “Geeks” (BTR004). The release has been battered by the likes of Sinden, Herve, Kanji Kinetic, Starkey, Bombaman, Joe Rogers, J.O.T.S. & countless others. With the immediate success of their first collaboration, the duo teamed up again in the fall of 2008 to build “Welcome to Vanier” and the off-kilt 4/4 bass smasher “Asian Cuddle Puddle”, due for release on their new digital label “Badman Digital” in mid 2010. He currently holds a residency with Ottawa’s only dubstep monthly “Steppin’ Up!” alongside Bowzer, Tsunami & Pandemic and has numerous releases in the works for 2010. Not one to be looked over, this Badman’s time is now! bowzer b2b Pandemic Badman Press, Capital Bass Culture These 2 are no strangers to the bass scene, and have been ripping up dubstep dancefloors since 2006.
